The same evening, Pastor Lawrence told me that he wanted to pray for me. He added that he knew that I was barren for years. I said 'ok' but my mind was wondering 'how did he know?' since I had never met Pastor Lawrence before. Indeed we had been trying for our second child for years until we had given up hope. We had even given all our baby clothes, the pram and the car seat away. We also considered adopting a child. We could sense the loneliness of our only daughter as she longed to have a brother and a sister. We too wanted to have a second child so that the two of them could take care of each other and where they could have each other to rely or count on.
Two months later after visiting NLCC, I discovered that I was pregnant while I was on assignment in the US. My EDD was 4 July. I was laughing and asking God if he was making fun of me as my older daughter’s EDD was 11 September.
I enjoyed my 1st and 2nd trimester. I did not experience any major nausea. I also made up my mind to opt for a C-section in week 38, so that our baby could have the same birthday as my Dad and my brother. However, during the 33rd week, I started spotting and bleeding and was hospitalized.
My gynaecologist gave me an injection to mature the baby's lungs, and medication to stop the spotting. He also put me on hospital leave to rest at home. After 2 weeks, the situation did not improve as I was still bleeding. My gynaecologist gave me only 2 dates to choose to deliver our baby - tomorrow or Wednesday. I even bargained for Friday, but her answer was 'NO'! I decided on Wednesday. My gynaecologist booked the operation time slot, preemie PD and incubator. We prayed and trusted God as He was the one who blessed us with this child. I might have wanted to deliver my baby in week 38 but that was not in line with His plan. We prayed that our baby would not have to go into incubation.
When I was out of the operation theatre, my husband told me that Abigail was not a premature baby. She was fine and did not need to go into an incubator. When we went back to my ward, we gave thanks to God.
Abigail was a God-send. She was a good-sized baby and weighed 2.68kg and was 49cm in length at birth. She had mild jaundice but did not require photo-therapy. At week 2, she could turn her head right and left when she was laid flat on her back. Whenever she cried, she could kick and slide to a 135-degree angle. At week 3, she could flip onto her stomach from either side. Less than 1 month old, she could sleep through the night. At 3 months old, she weighed 5.7kg and had doubled her birth weight. Praise the Lord!
God graciously saw me through my pregnancy and took care of baby Abigail. If God decided to bless us, He will see us through and take care of everything. What we need to do is to trust and have faith in Him.
